Artist's Description

Scanning electron micrograph of the head of an unidentified species of springtail (order Collembola). Springtails are the most primitive insects, dating back 300 million years in the fossil record. They are wingless and lack extenal reproductive appendages. The two groups of rounded cells on the top of the head are primitive eyes known as ocelli. The antennae (left) are also primitive, consisting of four articulated segments; the higher insects have multi-segmented flagellate antennae. The common name is derived from the habit of some species of using their tails to spring into the air. Magnification: x 700 at 8x10 inch size.
