Bamboo shoot. Longitudinal section through a young bamboo shoot in soil. The rhizome it is growing from is seen just below the surface. The stems (or culms) of bamboo are made up of hollow internodes separated by solid partitions called nodes. Bamboo is a member of the grass family Gramineae, and is found throughout the world in tropical and sub- tropical regions. It is most common in southeastern Asia.
