Description
Satellite image of sea ice in the marginal ice zone of the northern Weddell Sea. A number of icebergs can be seen in this area, which covers approximately 100 kilometres across. The swirling ice patterns are caused by the interaction of the sea ice with ocean currents and the wind. Image obtained by the ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) instrument on NASA's Terra satellite.
