Artist's Description

Screw propeller on the SS Titanic. The Titanic, which sank on her maiden voyage in 1912, was the largest moving man-made object made up to that time. Her propellers were correspondingly powerful. She had three: one either side and one at the back. The side propellers, of which this is one, were cast from bronze and weighed 38 tons. They were over 7 metres in diameter. The ship, still under construction, is in dry dock at the Harland and Wolff docks in Belfast, UK.
