Description
Saturn V first stage test stand construction, 1963. Flame deflector being installed in the test stand for the Saturn V first stage (S-IC). This test area was constructed between 1960 and 1964 at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), Alabama, USA, remodelling the previous test areas for NASA's Jupiter and Redstone rockets. The Saturn V was the launch vehicle for NASA's Apollo program of manned missions to the Moon. The Apollo program took place between 1961 and 1975. The Saturn V was one of the most powerful rockets ever made. Fully fuelled, the 110-metre high rocket weighed over 3000 tonnes. The rocket's first stage was the stage used during take-off. This test stand was 44 metres high, with foundations reaching down to the bedrock 12 metres below the ground. Photographed on 5 September 1963.
