Description
Source of the Amazon. Coloured satellite view of part of the Andes Mountains in Peru. Two large snow-covered peaks are seen. At left is Nudo Corpouna (6425m), and just right of centre is a peak in the Nevada de Ampata range. About half way between the latter and the top of the frame is a tiny lake, Lago Villafro. This is the source of the Apurimac branch of the Amazon river. The Apurimac flows northward to the Ucayali River, which later joins the Maranon to form the Amazon. The total distance from Lago Villafro to the Atlantic Ocean is 6448 kilometres. The data for this image were gathered by a Landsat satellite.
