Description
Potholes formed on horizontal sandstone surfaces due to biological weathering. Water collected in the depressions harbours a biofilm of microbes that dissolves siliceous minerals in the sandstone and thus widens the holes. The biofilm consists of cyanobacteria, fungi, and algae. Due to the low temperatures of the desert nights, the water in some holes in the background is still frozen. Photographed in Navajo National Monument, Arizona, USA.
