Description
Polarised light micrograph of sandstone, or arenite. Sandstone is a sedimentary rock composed of sand grain sized fragments of pre-existing rocks or minerals, known as clasts, cemented together by a matrix composed of minerals such as quartz, calcium carbonate, and iron oxide. In this example the grains are held together in a matrix of chalcedony. Sandstone is used in construction and paving and in the manufacture of glass. Most of the earth's oil and gas reserves are to be found in sand and sandstones due to their high porosity. Magnification: x27 at 10cm wide.
