Description
Samuel Pegge (1704-1796), English antiquarian. Pegge was ordained a priest in the Church of England in 1729. He was elected Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries (1751), collecting books, coins and medals and contributing articles to the society's journal 'Archaeologia'. He was awarded a doctorate in law (LL.D.) in 1791 from the University of Oxford. This engraving, by Philip Audinet, is based on a 1788 painting by Elias Needham. It is from 'Illustrations of the Literary History of the Eighteenth Century', an 8-volume work published between 1817 and 1858 by English printer and antiquarian John Nichols and his son John Bowyer Nichols.
