Description

Saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus). This reptile is found in estuaries, mangrove swamps and tidal stretches of rivers throughout South-East Asia, Australia and the islands of the western Pacific Ocean. They feed on fish, birds and mammals, preferring dead or dying prey. The saltwater crocodile is the largest living reptile, some males reaching lengths of over 7 metres. They use their broad tails to provide propulsion necessary to move them through the water whilst their legs are used for steering. Saltwater crocodiles are aggressive during the mating season and when guarding the nest. They are also highly territorial, and will attack anything which enters their territory, including humans. These factors combine to make them one of the most dangerous animals in the world. Photographed in Sabah, Malaysia.
