Artist's Description
Rubber trade in Africa. Trader weighing a bundle of rubber brought to a trading post by a local child (striped shirt, lower right) in the Middle Congo region of French Equatorial Africa. Natural rubber is harvested as latex from the cut trunks of rubber trees. The man weighing the rubber is the majordomo, employed by the colonial administrators (far left). Photographed in around April 1943, during World War II when the colony was under the control of the Free French forces fighting the Axis forces. This photograph is from the US Office of War Information.
