Description
RTV-G-4 Bumper sounding rocket launch, 1949. This early rocket was built in the USA, combining the German wartime technology of the V2 rocket and the USA's WAC Corporal sounding rocket. Eight launches took place between May 1948 and July 1950, six from the White Sands Proving Grounds in New Mexico, and the last two from the Joint Long Range Proving Ground at Cape Canaveral, Florida. The most successful flight was Bumper 5, on 24 February 1949, reaching a record height of over 400 kilometres and a velocity of 8300 kilometres per hour. The experiments performed here led directly to the rockets later used for space exploration and for the delivery of nuclear payloads.
