Artist's Description

Royal terns (Sterna maxima) on a beach. The royal tern is found in coastal regions of southern North America and Central America, and western Africa, although the populations are different subspecies. These birds were photographed in Florida, USA, and are classified as S. m. maxima. The African population is S. m. albididorsalis. It is a large tern, with a wingspan reaching 110 centimetres. It feeds on fish, which it catches by diving on it from the air, a technique known as plunge diving.
