Description
Rosa Parks (1913-2005), US civil rights activist. Parks was one of a number of people to resist the segregation of white and black people on buses in Montgomery, Alabama, USA. Her act of civil disobedience took place on 1 December 1955. Her subsequent arrest and trial led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott. By 1956, the segregation laws were repealed when a related case was heard by the US Supreme Court. Parks took part in a number of civil rights campaigns in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. She published her memoirs in 'Rosa Parks: My Story' (1992) and 'Quiet Strength' (1995). Photographed in 1964.
