Description
Roman mosaic. Tiled picture on the wall of the House of Neptune and Amphitrite in the ancient Roman city of Herculaneum, in southern Italy. Neptune was the Roman God of the Sea. Amphitrite was the Greek Goddess of the Sea, married to Poseidon, the Greek God of the Sea. Herculaneum was a small city on the lower slopes of the volcano Mount Vesuvius. It was populated by wealthy Romans, but was largely decimated by an eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79, which covered it in volcanic debris. Excavation of Herculaneum begun in 1738 and have revealed richly-adorned villas containing well-preserved mosaics, sculptures and paintings.
