Description
Roman mosaic in the ancient Roman city of Aquileia in northern Italy. This mosaic, from the 1st century AD is called an Asaraton oikos, meaning 'unswept house'. In Roman times people ate with their fingers and did not have plates, so they just threw their leftovers on the ground, as shown by this mosaic. Aquileia was founded as a colony by the Romans in about 181 BC.
