Artist's Description

Robot doll. Motors and circuitry on the back of Robota, a robotic baby doll. The motors allow the doll to move its limbs and head. Sensors allow it to react to touch, sound and movement, as well as computer and joystick commands. Robota is controlled by an artificial neural network (ANN), enabling it, for example, to link mimicked movements to melodies to produce a dance response to music. It can also learn simple sentences in about 15 minutes. It is hoped that Robota will be used as an educational toy, and also in the study of learning and autism. The doll was created by Dr Aude Billard from the Robotics Lab of the University of Southern California, USA.
