Artist's Description

RMS Titanic leaving Southampton on 10 April 1912. RMS Titanic, the largest ocean liner ever built at the time, was reputed to be unsinkable. However, during its maiden voyage it struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic on the night of 14 April 1912 and sank with the loss of 1517 lives. The departure from Southampton, UK, took place just after noon. The route went via Cherbourg in France and Queenstown (Cobh) in Ireland, before heading out across the Atlantic on 12 April. The white structure on the forward mast is the lookout post from where the iceberg was seen by two crewmen, too late to avert a collision.
