Description
Richard Anthony Proctor (1837-1888), British astronomer. Proctor developed a career as an author of popular books on astronomy. He published over 15 books and treatises between 1865 and 1888. His most ambitious work, Old and New Astronomy, was unfinished at the time of his death and was was eventually published in 1892. He became a fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1866, and contributed several papers. He is best known for his 1867 map of Mars, one of the earliest such maps. A crater on Mars is named after him. This portrait, signed 'Spy', is by the artist Leslie Ward, and was published in the British weekly magazine Vanity Fair (1868-1914), in the issue dated 3 March 1883, featuring Men of the Day.
