Description
Sailing ship. Restored North Sea cargo ship (clipper) Albatross, the last sailing ship of her kind to carry cargo commercially in Europe. The Albatross was built in 1899; it has a displacement of 140 tonnes, a 34 metre-long hull, and is capable of a speed of 18.5 kilometres per hour (10 knots). During World War II she was used to smuggle guns to the Resistance in occupied Europe, and also smuggled Jewish refugees out. The Albatross was bought in 1980 by Ton Brouwer who restored it and began using it to carry cargo commercially. The ship is crewed by four regular crew and up to six auxillaries.
