Description
Reed canary grass stem. Light micrograph of a section through a reed canary grass stem (Phalaris arundinacea). Vascular bundles (oval yellow and red structures) can be seen containing xylem (larger openings) and phloem (smaller openings) tissues. Xylem transports water and mineral nutrients from the roots throughout the plant, while phloem transports carbohydrates and plant hormones around the plant. Magnification: x14 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
