Description
1855 ink and watercolour painting entitled Recollection of an Evening at Liebig's". This depicts a gathering at the house in Muenich of Justus von Liebig(1803-1873), the German chemist. Liebig had been appointed to the University of Muenich by the King of Bavaria in 1853 and was a popular figure in society. Liebig was keen for science to be seen as a means to social and political progress, to this end he supported the translation and publishing of a German translation of Mill's 'Logic'. Liebig promoted a scientific approach to agriculture, notably having invented the idea of nitrogen fertilisers. Working with Giebert he devised a method for using beef carcasses to make a nutritious beef extract for the lower orders of society. This was later to be trademarked under the name 'Oxo"."
