Artist's Description

Queen Alexandra's birdwing (Ornithoptera alexandrae), museum specimen. Previously known as Troides alexandrae, this rare butterfly from eastern Papua New Guinea is the largest butterfly in the world. Its wingspan can exceed 25 centimetres. This specimen is from the French National Museum of Natural History (Museum national d'histoire naturelle, MNHN).
