Description
Prosthetic masks casts. Casts taken of injured soldiers faces (top row), reconstructed models made from those casts (middle row) and the final prosthetic masks (bottom row, on table). These casts and masks were made by the sculpture Anna Coleman Ladd. Ladd set up the American Red Cross 'Studio for Portrait-Masks' in Paris in 1917 to create cosmetic masks for soldiers disfigured in World War I. The masks were made of very thin metal painted to match the patient's skin colour.
