Description
Ear anatomy. Profile of a girl's head with the anatomy of the ear superimposed as an image on her face. Sound waves are collected by the outer ear pinna and pass down the auditory canal to strike the eardrum (oval). Vibrations are then transmitted through three tiny bones (malleus, incus and stapes, drawn as lines) of the middle ear to the fluid-filled structures of the inner ear. The inner ear consists of coils of the semi-circular canals which detect balance and body orientation; while the spiral-shaped cochlea detects sound. Nerves (not seen) transmit signals from the inner ear to the brain. A eustachian tube leads from the middle ear to the back of the nose.
