Description
Albert I of Monaco. Portrait of Prince Albert I of Monaco (1848-1922), oceaographer, aboard a ship. Also known as Albert Honore Charles Grimaldi, Prince Albert studied currents particularly the Gulf Stream and ocean drift in the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans. He established three observatories in the Azores to study the meteorology of ocean regions. He studied plankton down to depths of 5000 metres and this interest led him to study the diet and digestion of the whales which feed on plankton. Pioneering ideas of his included the use of aircraft to spot schools of fish, the creation of underwater reserves and concerns about overfishing.
