Description
Preparing a love potion, Roman mosaic. Mosaics consist of small pieces of coloured glass or stone, used to form an image or pattern on a floor or wall. This mosaic shows an aged sorceress (right) preparing a love potion for two younger women (wearing masks). The masks suggest that the scene is from a play by Aristophanes. This mosiac, dating from 150-125 BC, bears the name of Dioskourides of Samos, and was found in the Villa of Cicero, Pompeii. It is displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Naples, Italy.
