Description
Prehistoric burials sites on Orkney. 18th-century artwork of cross-sectioned views of several burial mounds in the Bay of Skaill, on the Orkney Mainland. A bone and bead are shown at top. These burial mounds are on the links (coastal sand dunes), the location of numerous important prehistoric remains, especially from the Neolithic. This artwork was drawn to accompany a 1772 description by Scottish naturalist, minister, and antiquarian George Low (1747-1795) of excavations carried out with Joseph Banks and James Lind. Published in Volume 3 (1775) of 'Archaeologia', the journal of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
