Description
Portrait of Hugh Miller (1802-56), Scottish writer and palaeontologist. Miller started life as a stonemason, and later became interested in the fossils he saw in the stone. He eventually became the leading expert on the geology of Scotland, as well as writing many works on theology and politics. He was a sturdy opponent of Darwin and his ideas on evolutionary theory. Miller committed suicide by shooting himself.
