Description
Polygonal dunes on Mars. Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter image of sand dunes with ridges that intersect to form polygonal shapes. Dunes commonly form at the base of craters. Winds blow the dust and sand grains from different directions leading to the formation of polygonal ridges. Sand grains on Mars originate mostly from basalt. Image obtained by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on 18th March 2013.
