Artist's Description
Experimental agrigenetics: rearing vanilla plants from tissue culture. Tissue culture involves the growing of isolated plant cells, or a single cell, taken from almost any part of the parent plant. These cells are reared under controlled conditions in a sterile growth medium. Whole plants can often be regenerated from tissue cultures. This technique enables prolific & rapid propagation of some plants, proving useful to commercial growers. It has been used to free crops of virus infection, since the virus does not penetrate certain tissue. Photo taken at Escagen, Inc., California, USA.
