Description
Pink and white grapefruit. View of halves of a pink and white grapefruit (Citrus paradisi). White grapefruits, the natural variety, are large and bitter-tasting citrus fruits. The pink form, which is the product of selective breeding, has the same taste, but is less bitter. Both forms are an excellent source of vitamin C. The grapefruit is thought to have originated in the West Indies as a mutation or natural hybrid of the pomelo (or shaddock, Citrus maxima). It is now grown in the tropics the world over, and has established a reputation for being a fruit most often eaten at breakfast.
