Description
Pineapple, 16th century artwork. This is thought to be the first European illustration of a pineapple. It is a woodcut from the book L'histoire naturelle et generalle des Indes (Paris, 1556) by the Spanish historian Gonzalo Fernandez de Oviedo y Valdes (1478-1557). This work, based on Oviedo's visits to the Americas, was first published in 1535, and later translated into English and French.
