Description
Pilot whale hunt. 19th-century artwork of long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas) killed in an annual whaling hunt in the Faroe Islands. Several whale species enter the waters around the Faroes once a year on their migratory paths. The Islanders use boats to force the whales into estuaries where the whales run aground and are trapped. The islanders slaughter the whales which are used for food and other products obtained from their bodies. The Faroes are a group of islands in the North Atlantic between the Shetland Islands and Iceland. Artwork from the 21st volume (first period of 1898) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
