Description
MODEL RELEASED. Physiotherapy. Physiotherapist helping two young children as they exercise. The children are wearing calipers on their legs to help support them. The muscles in their legs have been weakened by the disease poliomyelitis, or infantile paralysis. Poliomyelitis is caused by the polio virus. In severe cases the virus infects the central nervous system (CNS) causing inflammation and cell death. Muscles served by the affected nerves are weakened and can be paralysed. Vaccination, which started in the 1950s, has successfully controlled the disease. It has now been eliminated from Europe.
