Description
Hot cupping. 18th century illustration showing three physicians attending a patient and applying heated cups to the skin. This process is called hot cupping. As the heated cup is placed against the skin it starts to cool and forms an airtight seal. Cooling further, the inside of the cup becomes a partial vacuum and draws blood into the skin. In ancient Islamic medicine, the skin was cut first and the partial vacuum draws out blood. This type of blood letting is known as wet cupping, or Al-Hijamah. This woodcut comes from Medicina Aegyptiorum by Prosper Alpini, published at Leiden in 1719.
