Artist's Description
Pharmacopoea (1607), title page. Published in Paris, this book described medicinal and herbal remedies. The details are in Latin at centre. The full title of the book ('Pharmacopoeia dogmaticorum restituta') translates as 'Pharmacopia restored'. At left and right are the Ancient Greek authorities on medicine, Galen and Aristotle. Hippocrates is at upper left, with Hermes Trismegistus (founder of Hermeticism) at upper right with a phoenix. The Latin abbreviation D.O.M.A. stands for 'Deo Optimo maximo aeterno' ('to God, most good, most great'), seen below angels, a crown, the Sun and Moon, and a divine symbol. Medical and alchemical scenes are across bottom. This book was edited by French physician Joseph Duchesne (1544-1609).
