Pentagon terrorist attack. Ikonos satellite image of the destruction (centre left) of part of the Pentagon by the 11 September 2001 terrorist attack. North is at top. The Pentagon is the headquarters of the US Department of Defence. It is in the US state of Virginia, just outside the US capital city of Washington DC. On 11 September 2001, terrorists flew a hijacked plane into the Pentagon's western wing, causing significant damage and loss of life. Image taken less than 3 hours after the impact.
