Description
Patterns in beach sand. Patterns in the sand of an intertidal beach caused by waves and wind. Intertidal areas are those which are found between the waterlines of low tide and high tide. The sand patterns are therefore initially caused by the receeding tide. As the top layer of sand dries out, some sand particles may be blown by the wind to form streaks as seen here. The streaks disappear when the incoming tide covers the sand again. This was photographed at Achnahaird Bay, Scotland.
