Sickle cell crisis. A young patient with sickle cell anaemia, & suffering from sickle cell crisis lies in a Third World hospital bed. The sickle cell crisis can be brought on by a number of factors such as infection, cold weather or dehydration. The crisis starts suddenly and effects various parts of the body, causing pain, blood in the urine and damage to kidneys, lungs or intestines. The brain may also be affected leading to seizures or strokes. Sickle cell anaemia is an inherited blood disease that occurs primarily in black people & sporadically in the Mediterranean populations. It is caused by an abnormal type of haemoglobin occurring in red blood cells.
