Artist's Description
Passenger pigeon newspaper article, 1911. Cuttings from The Appeal, a newspaper published in St. Paul, Minneapolis, USA. The article reports on the last surviving Passenger Pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius), Martha, who lived in Cincinnati Zoo. Passenger Pigeons were once one of the most numerous birds in the world. Extensive hunting and habitat destruction over North America during the 19th and early 20th Centuries contributed to the extinction of the species. Martha died 1st September 1914.
