Cover artwork for the satirical US magazine 'Puck', showing British philosopher, sociologist, and political theorist Herbert Spencer (1820-1903) as a statue and watchdog for science (left). Attempts are being made by men, with ladders and oversized top hats, to muzzle Spencer's views on religion and science. The banner at upper right represents freedom of thought. The caption across bottom refers to the Society for the Suppression of Blasphemous Literature, and British evolutionary biologist Thomas Henry Huxley and British physicist John Tyndall.
