Description
Illustration of oxygen depletion in the oceans. Oxygen (O2) molecules are being released from the ocean into the atmosphere. The warming of oceans causes a decline in dissolved oxygen because the solubility of oxygen decreases and warm ocean waters are more stable. This stability slows down the thermohaline 'conveyor belt' circulation resulting in less oxygen being carried from the surface into the deeper ocean layers.
