Description
Ostriches (Struthio camelus) with chicks. Ostrich chicks are around 25 centimetres tall when born. They grow rapidly, but require care and protection for the first 3 to 6 months. The male usually cares for the newborn hatchlings, showing them what to feed on. The ostrich is the largest bird in the world, and at maturity (2-3 years) it can be over 2 metres tall. Photographed in the Kalahari regions of South Africa and Botswana.
