Artist's Description
Ostrich eggs. Man standing on ostrich eggs. The ostrich (Struthio camelus) is the largest bird in the world and it also lays the largest eggs in the world, weighing up to 1.5 kilograms, with a diameter of 12 to 15 centimetres and a length of between 15 and 18 centimetres. Each ostrich egg is equivalent to 24 chicken eggs in volume. The calcium carbonate shells are 0.5 centimetres thick and as demonstrated can take a relatively heavy load. The incubation period lasts for 42 days, during which time the male and female take turns in incubating the eggs. A mature female ostrich lays between 40 and 100 eggs a year.
