Description
Ornithomimus dinosaur running, computer artwork. Ornithomimus (meaning 'bird-mimic') was an agile, ostrich-like omnivore, about 4.5-6 metres long and 1.8-2.4 metres tall. It is thought to have fed on small animals, insects, eggs, fruit and leaves. It lived 76-65 million years ago, in the late Cretaceous period. The long tail probably acted as a stabiliser while running and turning. Since it is a similar size to an ostrich, it likely reached ostrich-like speeds of 70 kilometres per hour. The first fossils of this dinosaur were discovered in the USA in 1989.
