Description
Detached retina. Ophthalmoscope view of an AIDS patient's eye with a double detached retina. The retina has been torn away from it's choroid layer in two places. The tears are seen as two diagonal yellow lines at upper left and lower right. At right red blood vessels are seen emerging from the yellow optic disc. This is also where nerves enter the eye. Retinal detachment usually results from a tear in the retina, brought about by an injury or in this case, a complication of AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). This painless condition results in a loss of vision. Surgical treatment is usually required.
