Artist's Description
Open turbine water flow. Historical illustration of an open water flow design for turbines, a design also used to separate bodies of water at different levels (e.g. canals, hydroelectric power stations). The water at the higher level is held back by a sluice gate (right). When opened, water flows down to the lower level (centre). A turbine placed at this point can be used to generate electricity and power. Artwork from 'Moteurs' (1911) by French civil engineer Max de Nansouty (1854-1913), part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
