Artist's Description
Plant cell mitosis. Light micrograph of stages of mitosis in cells of the onion, Allium cepa. Cell division (or mitosis) involves nuclear division to produce two genetically identical daughter nuclei. Here, the nuclei resemble circular dark patches. Mitosis starts at prophase when the chromosomes in the nucleus appear as thread-like structures (at top). Metaphase occurs when chromosomes align at the centre of the cell (lower left); chromosomes then split into two chromatids, each of which move to opposite ends of the cell in telophase (centre left). A nuclear membrane then forms around these two daughter nuclei, & the cell cytoplasm divides. Phase contrast. Magnification: x400 at 35mm size.
