Artist's Description
Brown trout eggs. Close-up of one-week-old eggs of the brown trout Salmo trutta on a river bed. The brown trout is a large edible fish related to salmon. Three types of brown trout exist, living in the lakes, rivers and oceans of Europe. All trout come to rivers to spawn. The yolk-rich eggs are laid in a pit excavated in the river bed by the female. A single female may lay up to 10,000 eggs. The male fertilizes the eggs with his milt (sperm) after the eggs are laid. Only a tiny proportion of the eggs will be fertilized, most will be washed out of the pit and eaten by other fish.
